ATEX Machinery – What is it and do I need it?

ATEX machines are a crucial health and safety precaution to many industries including pharmaceutical, food & beverages, chemicals and personal care.
What is ‘ATEX’?
ATEX is the term for explosive atmosphere safe machinery and the name commonly given to the European Directive, which reduces the risk of an explosion. Explosive atmospheres are caused by flammable gases, mists and/or vapours, which, if mixed with air, only requires an ignition to cause an explosion.
Any manufacturer of ATEX machinery has the requirements of strict health and safety to meet. The machines have to be certified by a third party group in order to be sold and the equipment will always be ‘EX’ marked.
Do I need an ATEX machine?
From non-dairy powder products, to nail polish, to sanitiser to whiskey, there are many products which require ATEX to ensure that all risks of explosion are prevented.

At Adelphi Masterfil, all ATEX designs undergo a 3-hour testing period of continuous operation and temperature testing on top of all standard testing. Technical files are lodged with an official body and includes all details of material construction, risk assessments and ATEX certification. All documentation will be supplied with machines to ensure full regulatory compliance.
How can Adelphi help with ATEX?
We are experienced at designing and manufacturing various category II ATEX machines, suitable for:
- Zones 1 (explosive atmosphere consisting of a mixture with air or flammable substances in the form of gas, vapour or mist is likely to occur in normal operation occasionally)
- Zones 2 (An area in which an explosive gas atmosphere is not likely to occur in normal operation and, if it occurs, will only exist for a short time).
Our ATEX machines are adapted with any seals being changed from silicone to a more suitable and compliant material. Fume extraction points, galvanic isolation points, static dissipative materials and remote electrical cabinets with HMI are just some of the ways we have made our proven machines ATEX compliant.
