Ask the Expert I Jacketed Production Vessels
Adelphi Manufacturing’s Sales Director Dean Willis answers the industry’s most relevant questions:

How do I know if my production needs a jacketed vessel?

“Investing in a high quality heating and/or cooling system is crucial when temperature plays a vital role in determining the quality of your finished product.

A ‘jacketed vessel’ or ‘water jacketed vessel’ is a container created to enable a user to accurately control the temperature of its contents. Within the jacket surrounding the container, fluid (often water) is circulated, to either heat or cool your product, or to maintain it at a certain temperature.”

It is essential that my vessel adheres to my industry’s strict hygiene requirements. Can this be guaranteed?

“The Adelphi range of jacketed vessels are manufactured in pharmaceutical grade stainless steel, with a 304 stainless steel 1/4 bar low pressure water jacket. They are suitable for use with a non-pressurised water supply, with hot or cold water for heating or cooling. These vessels are supplied with a 1/4″ BSP water inlet at the bottom of the jacket and a 1/2″ BSP outlet at the top. They have crevice and pit free interiors and are polished throughout, to ensure only the highest levels of hygiene for your product. Our jacketed vessels are connected to a vessel’s jacket using pipes or hoses, which creates a closed loop; this ensures that the fluid within the jacket never comes into contact with your product in the inside container.

Due to the heavily regulated nature of many of our customers’ industries, it is critical that we supply only the materials that we specify. With this in mind we test all incoming stainless steel using our own portable X-Ray testing machine (below left). For certain products we are also able to test the surface smoothness of stainless steel, with our Surface Finish Analyser (below right).

Using these specialist pieces of equipment, we offer a cost-effective materials testing service, backed up by comprehensive certification where required, for your complete peace of mind.”

My product requires both heating and cooling. Is this possible using just one vessel?

“This is not too unusual, in many instances, products can require both heating and cooling. You may, for example, need your product to be heated to a set temperature, before being quickly cooled during the final stage of the manufacturing process. This may necessitate a chiller being configured to work with your jacketed vessel. Adelphi can provide expert advice about such configurations; we have recently created a bespoke 100L jacketed vessel for a customer manufacturing E-Liquids, which included a chilling unit (see image below).”

I need a large jacketed vessel, and other suppliers haven’t been able to fulfil my requirement…

At Adelphi, we are able to create jacketed vessels from 2L to 50L as standard, but other sizes are available upon request. Our largest ever bespoke project was a 2,500L water jacketed vessel for natural health industry giant Nelsons Spatone. Their Trefriw Wells Spa water is heated to approximately twelve degrees, to facilitate easier mixing with flavourings. Read more about this creation here >>>
